Charleston Waterkeeper is an environmental non-profit organization in Charleston, SC. Our mission is to preserve and protect the integrity of Charleston’s waterways by defending against pollution and contamination. Founded on September 16, 2008, Charleston Waterkeeper is one of the nearly 200 member programs of the Waterkeeper Alliance. By encouraging citizens to “take pride, take responsibility, and take action,” Charleston Waterkeeper strives to empower the public to take back our right to clean water.
We are “part investigator, scientist, lawyer and advocate.” By becoming the voice of the people, Charleston Waterkeeper will serve as the watchdog over our watershed assuring that our waterways will be left cleaner for future generations to enjoy. By maintaining a physical presence on and around our waterways, by responding to citizen’s complaints and tips, by engaging and encouraging our communities to take active roles in the issues affecting our waterways, by defending against pollution and by enforcing environmental laws, Charleston Waterkeeper will measurably improve the health of our waterways.
Charleston Waterkeeper’s jurisdiction includes Charleston Harbor, the Ashley, Cooper and Wando Rivers, and all feeding tributaries and waterways influencing the health of our watershed.
Meet the dedicated staff and board of directors that make all of this possible.
