Two Waterkeeper organizations, the Black Warrior Riverkeeper and the Hurricane Creekkeeper, have recently been interviewed by MTV’s Choose or Loose, Street Team 08. In this short video, “The Coal Truth,” the interviewees reveal the dangerous effects coal mining has on their local waterways.

Charleston Waterkeeper has launched its first membership campaign today. The waterways are the backbone to Charleston’s history, its culture, its economy, its environment, and its livelihood; protecting them is not a question, it is an absolute necessity. By taking pride, by taking responsibility, and by taking action to protect and preserve our waterways, we as a community are taking an active role in assuring that clean and abundant water will be available for generations to come (including our own).
In order to become a sustaining and successful part of the community, Charleston Waterkeeper needs community support. By becoming a member you are committing your support to Charleston Waterkeeper’s mission, its goals, and objectives. Many of you have asked how you can help Charleston Waterkeeper. Bo Petersen, reporter for the Post and Courier, has just written a great piece on the proposed Charleston Waterkeeper program, “Watching over the waters.” The article was published in Sunday’s paper (8/31/2008) on the front page of the “Local and State” section (B). Both Dean Naujoks, former Upper Neuse Riverkeeper, and Nancy Vinson, Program Director at Coastal Conservation League, offered great quotes in support of the endeavor. Thanks to everyone involved. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend.
