Documentary Investigates Coal Waste Disaster

In the wake of the Harriman, TN sludge spill of December 22, Appalshop is offering a free web stream throughout the month of January of their documentary, Sludge.  The film “investigates a recent Kentucky coal waste disaster and examines the role of federal regulatory agencies in the coalfields.  Filmed over four years, the documentary chronicles the aftermath of the spill, the ‘whistleblower’ case of Jack Spadaro, and the looming threat of coal sludge ponds throughout the region.”  To watch the film click here.

Take this opportunity to watch Sludge, as much of the events documented in the film closely parallel TVA’s recent spills in Tennessee and Alabama.  South Carolina is home to 9 coal sludge ponds/landfills scattered throughout the state.

With the proposed Pee Dee coal plant in the works, it is essential that we all educate ourselves on the dangers and lasting effects of coal powered energy.  This weekend, the National Wildlife Federation publicly opposed Santee Cooper’s plan to build a coal-fired power plant near Florence.
