We’ve got some real exciting news…Charleston Waterkeeper has received an incredible donation…a BOAT! Brian and Martha Criscuolo of James Island have generously donated their family boat to Charleston Waterkeeper. Spending the greater part of its life in the colder waters of Connecticut, this classic 1987 Starcraft will now act as Charleston Waterkeeper’s first official patrol boat.
Maintaining a patrol boat is an essential part of this organization. After all, Charleston Waterkeeper’s mission is to “measurably improve the quality of Charleston’s waterways.” It would be, in our humble opinions, incredibly foolish of us to offer this commitment without having an actual and physical connection to the health of our waterways. In order to truly understand the issues, the problems, the solutions and most importantly, the big picture, it is important for us to maintain a physical presence on, in and around our waterways.
Thanks to the generosity of the Criscuolos, Charleston Waterkeeper has taken a huge step forward. Over the past few weeks, we have been receiving a great number of citizen tips, calling in to report pollution, suspicious activity, or just to chat (OK, the last one was a lie). Over our short, four months of existence, we have been somewhat limited in our ability to respond to some of these reports; however, now, with our very own patrol boat, it will be so very accessible for us to appropriately respond to your tips.
The more access we have to the the issues that threaten the health, beauty and integrity of our waterways, the more we can do to improve and protect these natural resources.
Every official patrol boat needs an official name…leave a comment with your suggestions below. You can also help out by making a donation to Charleston Waterkeeper. This will help to alleviate the costs associated with operating and maintaining a boat (yikes!). Again, a huge thank you to Brian, Martha and the rest of the Criscuolo family!
