Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue
This past weekend over 75 volunteers came out to Folly Beach to help cleanup “The Edge of America.” As part of Barefoot Wine’s Beach Rescue Project, Charleston Waterkeeper teamed up with Charleston Surfrider to host this event. Despite a late start, the event was a huge success. With an army of volunteers combing the beach for cigarette butts, beer cans and plastic bags it was difficult for the thousands of beach goers to ignore the initiative the participants were taking. One volunteer noted that our presence was a great “visual reminder for beach goers to keep the beach clean.” Beach cleanup participants were able to unwind at the afterparty, sponsored by Barefoot Wine.
A huge thank you to all of you who came out to make the day a great success! Volunteers worked to remove 3,500 pieces of trash from our coastline. As expected, cigarette butts took the prize (with nearly 2,500 collected in a 2 hour time-frame). The graph below reveals the top 10 items found on Folly Beach.
