Chucktown Squash Sweeps the Beach!

This Saturday we spent a fun afternoon with the Chucktown Squash team from Sanders-Clyde Middle School. After a semester of try-outs and practices, Coach Anna brought her dedicated team of players to meet the Charleston Waterkeeper crew on Sullivan’s Island beach.

Chucktown Squash’s mission is to promote academic excellence, positive personal development and a healthy lifestyle to Charleston’s urban youth using the sport of squash.  Through participation in our on- and off-court curriculum, young people will access life-changing opportunities in which they can excel as scholar athletes and community members.

As part of their off-court curriculum the players must be involved in their community through volunteerism and outreach. As one of their first acts as a team they came out during the weekend to clean up a portion of Sullivan’s Island with Charleston Waterkeeper.

The kids scoured the beach from dunes to shoreline for trash and recyclables, giggled as they splashed in the waves, and “ooooo”ed and “ahhhh”ed over the crabs and jellyfish we found. It was a wonderful day for us at Charleston Waterkeeper and as usual, we feel inspired by the next generation of “Water Warriors” who continue to keep our mission alive by taking pride, responsibility and action in their communities!

Congratulations to the Chucktown Squash team, we’re rooting for you this season!

Thanks, also, to the Charleston Waterkeeper volunteers (Michael Costa and his EnviroSmart group) who came out to support the team and sweep the beach with us!
