We caught up with rockstar Dan Logan!

HP: Why do you choose to support Charleston Waterkeeper?

DL: This organization has an unlimited amount of good work it can do to fight the good fight. Our waterways are seeing an unprecedented amount of pressure from development, outdated septic systems, a massive influx of new recreational boats/boaters, and ultimately poor urban planning and foresight. The straw that broke the camel’s back for me, was when I was kayaking in a feeder creek to James Island Creek and I saw and smelled what I think is the most disgusting water I have ever paddled through. It is clear that DHEC and other government organizations aren’t going to do enough to help this situation. When I saw how much attention and press this organization could obtain, I realized that they really could raise enough money to ACTUALLY make a difference here in our city, and not just operate as a good cause without measurable results. I also love local oysters and, even though oysters are kind of predisposed to filter “bad” water, nobody wants to eat oysters out of water that is polluted from busted sewer mains, faulty septic systems, plastic nurdles, and Lord only knows what else. And so I typically get oysters from Bulls Bay.

HP: What is your favorite way to enjoy clean water?

DL: Nothing beats a sunset paddle out into the harbor and a dip in the water!! I also enjoy swimming in the ocean, inshore fishing, and just watching the tides go in and out over the marshes.

HP: What is your favorite waterway in Charleston?

DL: I can’t really say I have one waterway that I love, but I really like the areas around the inlets, and nothing compares to finding a small salt marsh creek that meanders underneath a beautiful live oak tree handing over it dripping with Spanish moss.
