On January 29, workers delivering a tank of biodiesel to Dewees Island accidentally spilled the fuel into the nearby waterways.  Kim Knight, the Dewees Island Manager, took immediate and responsible action after witnessing the spill.  A letter distributed to Dewees Island residents is quoted below:

Dear Dewees Property Owners,

There was an oil spill today in Dewees Inlet. Cannon Marine Barge was delivering a tank of Biodiesel fuel to the island. The barge crew accidentally tipped over the tank spilling fuel on the barges deck and into Dewees Inlet. I notified Federal and State agencies immediately.  The Coast Guard came to Dewees and inspected the site of the spill.  They estimated less than 50 Gallons was spilled in the Inlet, possibly only 15 Gallons. The rest of the spilled fuel remained on the Barge’s deck. Robbie Cannon of Cannon Marine was interviewed by the Coast Guard.  Reports were submitted and a Fine and Warning was assessed to Mr. Cannon. There is a thin sheen on the water in the vicinity of the Dewees Island Ferry Landing; this should dissipate within the next day or two, depending of the amount of sunshine.  Mr. Cannon will repair the damaged fuel tank at his expense.
