Kent Griffin

Kent-2

We caught up with Kent Griffin, Charleston Waterkeeper Board Chair and long-time supporter!

We first met Kent more than 7 years ago at Mountianfilm Charleston. Since then Kent has been integral to the growth and the success of Charleston Waterkeeper. We’re so grateful for his continued dedication and honored that he took the time to express why he supports us!

HP: Why do you choose to support Charleston Waterkeeper?

Kent Griffin: Growing up in Florida- we spent a lot of time out in the creeks and bays. Over time I saw first hand many swamps and rivers change as they were manipulated and in some cases ruined by sprawling development that failed to preserve our natural environment. But I also saw cases where vigilant efforts by locals led to protections and restoration of wonderful natural waterways. Eventually, we moved here, in large part drawn by the abundance of waters that felt so familiar. Now with my own family we get to enjoy swimming, paddling, fishing, crabbing and boating – everyone enjoys time on the water. But we also spend time learning about stewardship, understanding the threats, what we can do – what we have to do – to protect this treasure. It’s one volunteer program where each member of my family now has their own personal connection to the effort.

I choose to support Charleston Waterkeeper because I believe in the critical importance of protecting our natural waters – I believe in acting locally – and I’ve been really impressed by the practical, results driven work of the team.

* The army of volunteers monitor and clean up our waterways, but also spreads the word, helping inform folks on the issues – and gives people the chance to connect, to see and feel the impact of their own efforts. I’m optimistic this will add the scale of people committed to clean water over time.
* Their fact-based, data-driven approach to understanding issues is unique
* The team is super skilled! – with technical depth of understanding on the issues, but also the experience and understanding of how to advance public policy to bring about constructive change
* They have a commitment to the mission- and now 10 years in – they have a track record for making an impact.

Thinking globally – acting locally – Charleston Waterkeeper nails it.
