What’s at stake on Cainhoy?

Stand up for your wetlands and creeks: sign your name to help protect the Cainhoy peninsula.

Developers are trying to build more than 12,000 units and fill in nearly 200 acres of wetlands on one of Charleston’s most ecologically important and vulnerable tracts of land.

The Cainhoy peninsula, just above Daniel Island on the Wando River, is an untouched landscape that provides habitat for endangered and threatened wildlife; has thousands of acres of forests, wetlands, and creeks; and borders the Francis Marion National Forest.

This 9,000-acre tract is no place for this enormous development that would choke local creeks with over 700 docks, overwhelm existing infrastructure, and add to the mounting traffic issues on Clements Ferry Road and surrounding areas.

City of Charleston leaders agreed to this development plan nearly 30 years ago. It’s time to revisit it under our modern understanding of flooding and sea-level rise, and ensure it meets a higher standard for the resilience of our estuary.
