INTERVIEW WITH RICK CRAWFORD
We caught up with the true Sustainable Angler, Rick Crawford!
HP: Why do you choose to support Charleston Waterkeeper?
RC: I believe that being active in your local community is important, and Charleston Waterkeeper provides lots of ways for the community to get involved in keeping our waterways clean, which is important to me as an angler, but even more important as a father. I check with Waterkeeper on where it is safe to take my daughters swimming!
HP: What is your favorite way to enjoy clean water?
RC: I am a fly fishing nut, so I enjoy chasing tailing redfish in the grass whenever I get the chance, and I also love to kayak and surf, and some days I get to do all three, which is my favorite way to enjoy clean water!
HP: What is your favorite waterway in Charleston?
RC: All of them!
HP: Tell us about what you have been working on or a recent project
RC: My company, Emerger Strategies, is a sustainable business consultancy whose mission is to measure and improve your company’s sustainability performance, and I work with a lot of companies in the fishing industry. I recently created a Sustainability Toolkit for the American Sportfishing Association, which was a lot of fun, and I also have a podcast, The Sustainable Angler, so I release a new episode every month, which hopefully inspires anglers to protect the planet!
HP: Tell us something interesting about yourself that we might not know
RC: While I was living in Jackson Hole, I worked for Wyoming Game & Fish as an Aquatic Invasive Species technician one summer, and installed solar panels another summer in Jackson Hole, which is where the seed was planted to figure out a way to marry my passion for sustainability and fishing!
